No rest for Town defender McLaughlin

He's had a limited pre-season break in the last couple of seasons and Fleetwood Town's Conor McLaughlin is preparing for another summer without his feet up as he weighs up his club future.

The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international had minimal time off last summer as he spent most of June in France at Euro 2016.

This summer looks no different for the defender, who clocked up his 200th Town appearance as he captained the side in their play-off semi-final defeat against Bradford City.

It may still be McLaughlin’s last action in Town’s colours, given the out of contract full-back is yet to agree a fresh deal.

The club has offered him a new contract, but with reported interest from Championship club Barnsley and other League One clubs in the EFL right-back of the season, McLaughlin has a decision to make regarding his future.

But, right now, the full-back is back with his international team-mates on a training camp in Manchester ahead of their home friendly against New Zealand in Belfast on June 2.

That is followed by the Group C World Cup qualifying game in Azerbaijan on June 10 with Northern Ireland presently sitting second in the table behind Germany after five games.

The English and Scottish top flight players have not linked up for the camp in Manchester but McLaughlin, as well as the Championship and League One representatives, is preparing ahead of the double-header.

Fellow first teamers, Norwich City duo Michael McGovern and Kyle Lafferty and Nottingham Forest’s Jamie Ward, have joined McLaughlin on the training camp.
