FLEETWOOD Town boss Micky Mellon is hopeful of completing his pre-season squad strengthening with two finals signings by the end of the week, writes ANDY MOORE.
The Town boss has plenty of options already, admitting he “went for the all-time record” by fielding 25 players in yesterday’s opening friendly against Gateshead.
Damien Johnson, who is nursing an ankle injury, was the only one of Town’s seven summer recruits all got not to feature in the Highbury match, which the Tyneside team won 1-0 with a first-half goal by Liam Hatch.
Several triallists also featured and Mellon told The Gazette: “It was essentially a training game but a lot of players got a 45-minute workout. It was a useful guide to where we are fitness-wise.
“The new players did what we expected of them and there were some promising signs.”
As for those further additions, Mellon added: “They are two long-term targets who will be the final pieces of the jigsaw. We have reached agreement with them and hope to have the contracts finalised by Friday.”
Jamie McGuire came through yesterday’s match unscathed, following his operation on a fractured cheekbone, though Mellon had to contend with another facial injury as centre-half Kieran Charnock suffered a nasty knock to the nose.
