Burns has been on-loan at League One club Fleetwood since February and the City academy star’s contract at Ashton Gate was due to expire at the end of this season.

But he has taken advantage of a clause offering him an additional year at the Championship club.

The Robins’ head coach Lee Johnson says he has been impressed with Burns’ performances during his time on-loan at Fleetwood.

But says Burns’ next challenge when his loan at Highbury is up at the end of the campaign is to push for a place in City’s first team.

He said: “Wes has done really well at Fleetwood, raising his profile and increasing his value. I don’t mean value as in financially, but in terms of experience and confidence.

“It’s been a brilliant exercise for Wes to go to Fleetwood. Every time I’ve watched their highlights he’s either scoring or assisting goals and he deserves another year.

“He is still learning his trade, but there is no doubt he will return from Fleetwood an improved player. The next challenge for Wes is to push for selection in our first team.”

Burns has scored five goals in nine games for Fleetwood and is playing a key role in Town’s fight to beat the drop.

The Wales U21 player says he is enjoying his time on the Fylde coast.

He said: “I’m thrilled to have secured a new deal at Bristol City. I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience at Fleetwood right now and, hopefully, I can take my good form back to Ashton Gate for next season.”
