Fleetwood Town’s players start their first-ever pre-season training schedule under new boss Joey Barton today and he wants the sceptics to carry on doubting. That way, Barton feels it will be all the sweeter when he and his players prove them wrong. It is Barton’s first managerial role, having hung up his boots on completing a 13-month ban from football activity at the start of this month. Now Barton truly gets down to business as the first-team players and development squad return to Poolfoot Farm. And the 35-year-old wants Town to return to basics and to the habits of winning and gaining promotions which are in the club’s DNA .Barton said: “I’m not really one for selling (myself). I’m quite happy that people are sceptical.“Because usually if people underestimate you, then when you do go on to shock them and be really successful they are kind of left scratching their heads. They are left thinking, ‘How has that happened?’“Fleetwood Town is a club that has already been succesful – the promotions, just look at the stand there, all the honours they have got in recent memory.“The club knows what ‘good’ looks and feels like.“I’m just coming in to help us to get back on track.“The people I am coming in with aren’t here to reinvent Fleetwood Town because it is already very good at what it does.”
