Evans strikes again for back-to-back Fleetwood wins

The Cod Army perhaps made hard work of securing back-to-back League One victories as numerous chances went begging, though Ched Evans’ second goal in four days was enough to secure the points.

And head coach Barton was well satisfied with a win which lifted his side into 10th place in the table.

“We would have been disappointed had we drawn the game,” he said. “But as I said to the lads in the dressing room, I thought we played a lot better last Tuesday at Accrington and didn’t get any points.

“Over the course of a season 1-0 is always a good score. It certainly was when I was a player and it will always help you to climb up a league table.

“To back up an excellent team performance at the weekend at Gillingham, though, was the most pleasing thing.

“We can pass the ball better than we did in the second half against Shrewsbury, and we can certainly be a bit more clinical, but we came here looking for the three points and we’ve managed to take them, so it’s job done.

“We shut Gillingham out on Saturday, where we had to defend properly due to the physicality, and Shrewsbury were very similar.

“We knew they’d relish the wind being at their backs in the second half but we’ve stood up to be counted, as you have to do in League One, and Ched’s produced a nice finish to win the game.

“We felt we should have put the game away earlier but it’s testimony to the group that they’re disappointed at only winning 1-0.

“We have played better than this and not won games. You always have to grind games out in this league and this was one of those nights.”
