Hard work is the recipe for Fleetwood Town keeper Urwin

So far, the summer has seen Alex Cairns brush off interest from the Championship – and take the number one shirt – while Billy Crellin has had another England call-up, joining the U19s.

Chris Neal also left Highbury to join Salford City, meaning Urwin – who joined from AFC Fylde in 2016 – faces a huge summer.

He did not get a chance to stake his claim under Uwe Rosler but impressed in a season-long loan spell at National League North side Chorley.

Since taking over, Town’s new head coach Joey Barton has emphasised the need to provide the development squad players with a path to the first team.

It is understood that, if Cairns remains at the club as expected, Fleetwood will not go shopping for a new number two.

That leaves a battle between Crellin and Urwin for a place on the bench when Town host AFC Wimbledon on August 4.

With that spot up for grabs, Urwin is determined to take his chance and impress the men in charge.

He said: “At the minute I have been told I am going to get a chance to show what I can do, then take it from there really.

“I have just got to give my all and see where it takes me.

“It is a big part in my career this pre-season.”

Urwin says the key to getting that nod will be continuing to work hard.

Being part of the second meanest defence in the National League North last season showed he is more than capable of impressing if given playing time.

As a result, Urwin believed that loan spell with the Magpies has enhanced his chances of featuring more prominently with Town, having returned to Poolfoot Farm with more experience under his belt.

He said “I think I just need to keep working hard, keep doing what I can do and, when I do get my chance, show what I can do.

“With playing all those games last year it feels a lot more natural now than when I came back in the past.

“Sometimes it can feel a bit foreign but I’ve felt good.”

Even though they are all competing for the two spots in Town’s matchday squad next week Urwin says the trio not only want each other to do well but will also bring the best out of each other.

He said: “We are all going to push each other, hopefully play as many games as possible and keep pushing.

“They are all great lads, good lads.”
