Going backwards not an option for Town forward Ball

Fleetwood striker David Ball is treating Sunday's crunch clash against Crewe as a cup final, with Town one game away from clinching survival or being relegated for the first time.

One point would keep Town up and send local rivals Blackpool down to League Two but Ball is going into the game focused on winning rather than settling for a draw.

It is last chance saloon for Town as they have missed several opportunities to clinch survival over the last few weeks.

And Ball says Fleetwood need to be confident on the ball and learn from Monday’s 3-1 slip-up at Walsall by showing more intensity.

The frontman said: “You personally go into the game with the mentality that you want to win.

“It is about competing and at Walsall we did not compete, so we know what the job is.

“It felt to me as if people thought everything was all right but it is not.

“That was totally not in our character.

“The gaffer (Steven Pressley) sets us up to press, be in people’s faces and play with tempo and there was not any of that at Walsall, especially in that first half.

“Now we have got one more chance to keep ourselves in the league. It is about us and nobody else.

“Everyone has got to put everything aside, train hard and go into Sunday as if it is a cup final.

“Everyone has got to do their bit and be ready.

“We have got to be confident, and not shy away from getting on the ball and playing the way we play.

“It is the only chance. I certainly do not want to go backwards.

“We are a good enough team to win at home but we have to play with more intensity and compete all over.”

Ball has been coming off the bench to play just behind the strikers in recent weeks.

And he was pleased to have played of an advanced position when he made his first start for a month at Walsall.

He said: “I like to be in the penalty area, that is where I can score my goals. I’ve played a lot further back this season but I can play there.

“Ultimately I want to score goals and the closer I can be to goal the better.”
