David Ball’s late strike wasn’t enough to rescue Fleetwood’s Capital One Cup campaign as they went down 3-2 at Notts County
Ball set up a grandstand finish when he scored three minutes from time, Ryan Crowther unable to put away a late chance which would have taken it to extra time.
Town made three changes for the cup clash and one of the fresh faces, Gareth Evans gave them the lead just after the quarter hour with a delightful chip.
But Fleetwood were very much second best in the first half and went in a goal behind at the break, Enoch Showunmi’s bullet header levelling for the Magpies before Danny Haynes fired them ahead from close range.
Town were much improved after the break but fell further behind when Callum McGregor’s 20 yarder took a mean deflection.
They were handed a lifeline with seven minutes to play when Manny Smith was shown a second yellow card - Ball’s effort from outside the box making the man advantage count but it was too late to keep Town in the cup.
