FLEETWOOD boss Graham Alexander was delighted to be honoured for his long and distinguised playing career at the Football League Awards - but insists his focus is now on a new challenge.
The former Scunthorpe, Preston and Burnley defender, who made more than 1,000 professional appearances, was handed the Capital One Credit To The Game award at the ceremony on Sunday night.
The category was introduced this year and recognises a player that has reached the end of an illustrious career. It is a chance to celebrate the real stalwarts of The Football League.
Alexander only found out about his win on Sunday.
He said: “I was going down for the ceremony but didn’t know I’d won anything until the day.
“It is great to be recognised in this way and it was a fantastic night down in London - I took my son along with me.
“This is an award which celebrates my playing career. That ended nearly a year ago.
“I want to focus on my new job now.
“That is being the manager of Fleetwood Town and I want to do the best I can in my new career.”
