Jones, 32, was released by Norwich City this summer and becomes Joey Barton's 10th signing of the summer after a successful trial.

The keeper started Town's 2-1 pre-season win over National League North side Chorley and goes straight into contention with Alex Cairns and Matty Urwin for Saturday's League One opener with AFC Wimbledon.

Speaking before the deal Barton said: "I do think we need another keeper to make sure (Al) is competitive and he is being pushed.

“Matty has done that in pre-season, Billy Crellin (on-loan at FC United) has done that.

“We feel that we are pushing Billy down a development pathway so that he develops to his full potential.

“We may need to supplement that with another keeper.

“We have had Paul Jones on trial, he did really well against Chorley made an incredible save to keep us in the game, he has been very good in training, if we can firm that up it might be an option we take.”
