Fleetwood's Bobby Grant hungry for work in Hungary

And after featuring in Friday’s 4-0 win at Salford City, Grant is eager to get more minutes under his belt during Town’s pre-season tour of Hungary, starting in today’s match against Slovakian second division side STK Fluminese Samorin at 5.30pm local time (4.30 in the UK).

Grant said: “It is great to be back playing. I feel great, I feel fit, I feel strong. I have tweaked a lot of my training programme and I am seeing the benefits of that now.

“I know it is early but I hope I can continue to perform. It is a big season for me personally.

“I want the club and the team to go in the right direction because there can be a massive goal at the end of it if we do well.”

Town are into their third day at their base – the Globall Hotel in Telki, the raining centre of the Hungarian Football Federation.

Fitness is high on Grant’s (below) agenda after he missed a chunk of last term due to a freak knee injury.

He jarred a knee during half-time in the 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers in October, only returning to league action in the 2-1 defeat at Gillingham in January.

He told Town’s media team that their Hungarian base is the perfect place to enhance fitness levels.

He said of the trip: “It has been great. We got here on Sunday, got the journey out of our legs and had good food.

“On Monday we had a nice session and an afternoon in the pool. The facilities are outstanding. We have had a good start to the week.

“The intensity is very good. If we want to do anything this season, training has got to be at maximum intensity. It is the only way.

“All the lads have bought into it and are enjoying the training. You come off the pitch with a good sweat, knowing you have worked hard and earned your dinner.”

As for new head coach Joey Barton, fellow Liverpudlian Grant said: “The manager and staff have given us confidence with the way they go about it every minute of every day.

“They set the standards, and if you don’t keep those standards high you will fall away.”
