Mooney, follows in the footsteps of fellow Town youth star Billy Crellin who also gained international recognition by getting called-up for the England U18 squad last week.

Now another Town youngster Mooney has been named in the Welsh 20-man squad for their two matches against Iceland on September 2 and 4 in Rhyl.

The 18-year-old was rewarded with his first professional contract in the summer for his impressive performances in the club’s under 18’s last season.

Currently he is impressing on-loan at high flying NPL First Division North side Brig, though he will miss Neil Reynolds’ side’s FA Cup first qualifying round at Ashton Athletic to link-up with Paul Bodin’s squad.

Town’s development squad head coach Paul Murray wished both Mooney and Crellin well on international duty and said the call-ups show the club’s progression.

He said: “This is brilliant opportunity for Dan to show his qualities at international level. We have monitored his progress whilst on loan at Bamber Bridge which has been very successful, and I’m sure the Wales coaching staff have seen what we have seen.

“This call-up adds to the club’s progression at international level, following Billy Crellin’s recognition by being named in the England under 18’s squad last week. We wish them both well and hope they grasp the opportunity with both hands, of which we are sure they will.”
