Belgian fans aim to repeat dream visit to Highbury

Back in March we wrote about Niels du Puydt and three Belgian pals from Ghent, who have taken Town to their hearts and travelled over to watch Fleetwood face Gillingham last season.

As members of the Fleetwood Town Official Supporters Club they received the full VIP treatment, enjoying a stadium tour and meeting chairman Andy Pilley along with their favourite player Paddy Madden.

Niels and his friends Kevin Bonte, Bart De Pourcq and Tom Moerman were looking forward to a return trip to watch Fleetwood face Blackpool in December but those plans are on hold as both countries battle a resurgence of coronavirus.

That didn’t stop us catching up with Niels, who is keeping his spirits up and making do with following Fleetwood from afar.

He told The Gazette: “We’re doing all right. None of us or our friends or family have gotten sick yet, that’s the most important thing. Life in Belgium was getting back on track but now the numbers are going back up again.

“We keep following Fleetwood, of course, through social media and online streams.

“We were hoping to go to the Blackpool game on December 5 but we realise that’s probably not going to happen, and in the spring we were planning on taking a bigger group of friends.

“Let’s hope we can come to the club in 2021. But wherever we are, we will always support the team.”
