Town beat off Championship and fellow League One clubs to secure McAleny’s signature from Everton last summer. A blistering 14-goal loan spell at Oxford last term sparked that battle for his services.

And it looked like a major coup when the 25-year-old started his Town career with a two-goal debut against Rotherham.

However, the injury-prone forward’s bid to play 30-plus games in a season for the first time was rocked just a week later, when he picked up the ankle injury that would blight the first half of his campaign.

But the striker has been back to full fitness in 2018 and is aiming to end the season on a high after another goal of the season contender at his former club Oxford – his fifth of the campaign and first under John Sheridan.

And the striker, who penned a three-year deal, is targeting improvement next term as Town bid to battle at the right end as they secured their third-tier status.

He said: “I need a better season next season. I always want to better the season before.

“It has been a frustrating season personally, so I am definitely looking at improving that. I’ve always had high standards personally. You always want to better your performance.

“If it is not up to your standards, you can be a little hard on yourself but that is just the way I am. I will always set my standards high.”

Starting the final four games with a derby at Blackpool, McAleny wants more goals as he bids to end the season on a high to build that platform for the next campaign.

He said of being injury-free: “It is good for the mind. I’m just taking it game by game. Hopefully I’ll finish the season fit and strong, and be back at it in the summer.

“I want a few more goals and hopefully good performances.”
