Fleetwood Town defender is on the road back after Covid-19
Fleetwood Town full-back Danny Andrew has described the trials and tribulations of having Covid-19.
The left-back, 30, played his first game for almost a month in last week’s defeat at MK Dons and has started both of Town’s goalless draws since against Wigan Athletic and Northampton Town.
Andrew, now in the second season of his second spell at Highbury, has spoken about contracting the virus earlier this month.
He explained: “It was really frustrating because it was at the end of our 10 days’ isolation (after Town reported positive tests on New Year’s Eve).
“The night before we were due to start training again, I lost all taste and smell, so it was a case of starting all over again.
“I had another isolation period but I wasn’t too bad and, luckily, I’ve stayed fairly healthy through it.”
Andrew then found himself thrown in at the deep end at Stadium MK on Tuesday of last week.
He added: “It was tough playing the MK Dons game after I’d been off for over two weeks, but when you get an opportunity to play, you can’t turn it down.
“Unfortunately that game didn’t go to plan (Town lost 3-1) but now I feel a lot better.
“After the time I spent away, the more minutes I play and the more training I get, the better I feel.”
Like everyone else at the club, Andrew is hoping tomorrow’s visit to Oxford United brings a much-needed win and reignites Fleetwood’s bid for the League One play-offs.
He said: “Every game is a battle and Oxford will probably be a different kind of battle to Northampton on Tuesday.
“They will probably pass the ball a little more but it’s all about us. If we get another shutout, nick a goal and win 1-0, we’ll be happy with that.
“The play-offs have to be a realistic target. We need a target and ours is looking above us and not below.
“So we have to keep working hard and trying to keep clean sheets and win games.”
