Fleetwood Town chief Steve Curwood hopeful over fans' return

The last home game played in front of the Cod Army faithful was last season’s goalless draw with Blackpool almost 13 months ago.

Chief executive Steve Curwood has been in talks with other clubs and the EFL about getting supporters back into stadiums and feels that a “bullish” attitude is the best approach.

Curwood said: “We remain hopeful of getting back to where we need to be.

“We need to keep putting the pressure on from our side that we’re ready to go and we need to keep banging the drum that our fans are ready to get out there and enjoy what they’ve been enjoying for many years.

“We keep hearing noises and doubts in the public sphere but I think everyone needs to remain bullish and confident we can get back to normal life as best we can. We’re very hopeful we can get everyone back as soon as possible.”

Curwood has faith that the steps being taken can result in the fans’ safe return.

He added: “There is some element of trepidation as we hear from the medical fraternity about transmissions.

“But given the vaccination rollout and the reduction in hospitalisation and deaths, soon that is something that is going to go away.

“We need to be relatively bullish and try to live our lives as we’ve been used to historically and enjoy the freedom we’ve been used to.”

The government’s ‘roadmap’ allows for the possible return of some spectators to sports stadiums from May 17.
