Tough away test for Town in FA Cup

The Cod Army welcome Shrewsbury Town to Highbury this evening (7.45pm) looking to make it back-to-back League One wins for the first time this season.

Evans believes that with the new additions to the squad only making Town stronger, there is no excuse if they don’t continue to flex their muscles.

The 31-year-old said:“It should be a springboard. I think at the start of the season our squad wasn’t as strong as it is now, and you could maybe forgive not following a win with another win.

“But now, after Saturday’s performance and grinding it out, we should be following it up with a win at home against Shrewsbury.

“We’ll just wait and see but we’re confident.

“The games do come thick and fast, but for us as a squad and as a club we should be kicking on now and getting back-to-back wins.”

The Welshman came off the bench to score his first league goal of the season to seal victory over the Gills, finishing with aplomb after being released down the right channel by fellow scorer Paddy Madden.

Evans, whose only other goals this season came in the EFL Cup win over Wigan Athletic in early September, was pleased to get off the mark in League One and hopes the goals begin to flow for him.

However, he admits being used as a foil as much as a goalscorer in head coach Joey Barton’s tactical set-up.

And he couldn’t resist poking a bit of fun at teammate Mark Duffy for his supporting run from midfield.

Evans said of Saturday’s stoppage-time goal: “To be honest, I was waiting for Duffy to get up with me but he’s that old he couldn’t keep up!

“I just wanted to slip him in, so shooting was my only option really. It was nice to get a goal and get going.

“With strikers, it is just that one that goes in off your back or off your head and then they start coming. Hopefully that’s the start of it now.

“My role in the team is more about setting a platform for the team, getting people playing and creating goals for other people.

“I do enjoy scoring, but when you’ve got people around you like Paddy Madden and Callum Camps who score goals it does take a bit of pressure off you, especially when you’re getting older.

“It’s always nice to get a goal and I think Shrewsbury will be another opportunity for the lads to get on the scoresheet, especially the strikers
