Danny Andrew: Still so much to play for at Fleetwood Town

A mid-table finish was looking the likeliest outcome to Town’s League One season, though after Tuesday's 2-0 home win over Ipswich Town stretched their unbeaten run to six games Fleetwood are just five points outside the play-offs with 10 to play.

Speaking ahead of their latest victory, left-back Andrew said he just wants to win games of football.

He said: “You’ve got to look up the table – there’s no point in playing every week if you’re not.

“There’s no point in just thinking that we’re probably not going to get relegated. It’s a tough ask to get into the play-offs but that is irrelevant.

“You want to win every game you go out to play, whether you have something to play for or if you haven’t.

“Recently we’ve played well and picked up a few wins and we’ll look to keep winning.”

After reaching the play-offs last season, Fleetwood had set their sights high but Covid and a change of management have made for a disrupted campaign.

Andrew said: “It was always going to be difficult after last season and how well we did – and who knows what would have happened if Covid hadn’t hit?

“We were in good form and there were only nine or 10 games left.

“All of us fancied our chances of going up automatically, let alone through the play-offs.

“To back that up this season was going to be difficult and obviously there have been a few changes.

“We’d like to be higher than we are in the league – any team outside the play-offs would like to be higher.”

The 30-year-old has been one of Town’s most consistent players, even though he was one who caught coronavirus.

Andrew said: “I got Covid and missed a league and cup game, but thankfully I’ve been able to keep myself out there every week otherwise.

“There are other lads who run a lot further and a lot faster than me, but I’m doing as much as I can for the team.

“I do see keeping fit as quite an achievement. I did my ACL two or three years ago, but up until the game I missed for Covid I was on around 115 consecutive league appearances.

“I was devastated to lose that record. It’s just a case of play a game, recover, train and go again. When you get into the momentum and flow of things, it helps as well.”
