The Tykes' 2-1 victory lifted them out of the bottom three and dashed Brentford's hopes of automatic promotion. Instead West Bromwich Albion will go up to the Premier League with champions Leeds United after a 2-2 draw with QPR.

Fulham also had a chance of securing automatic promotion at Wigan but had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Latics had led through Kieffer Moore but needed to hold on for victory to stay out of the bottom three, pending their appeal.

All three of the clubs promoted from League One last season were involved in the relegation scrap, and Barnsley's victory combined with Luton Town's 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers meant it was Charlton who finished third-bottom after a 4-0 thumping by Leeds.

Hull always needed a miraculous set of results last night to dodge the drop and their return to the third tier after 15 years at higher levels was confirmed with a 3-0 defeat by Cardiff City.

That win clinched a play-off spot for Cardiff, alongside Brentford, Fulham and Swansea, who pipped Nottingham Forest to the final place on goal difference.
