Barrie McKay on ending the season strongly at Fleetwood and the possibility of staying at Highbury

The winger is coming to the end of his second loan spell at Highbury from Championship side Swansea City having made 36 appearances since first joining in January last year.

He played a key role as Town reached last season’s play-offs under Joey Barton.

Having found game time hard to come by with Simon Grayson in charge, the 26-year-old has regained his starting place for Town's last six games and scored the winning goals at AFC Wimbledon and Doncaster Rovers this month.

McKay said: “There’s been nothing with the gaffer about next season. It’s not up to me, it’s up to them if they want to offer or they don’t.

“A few weeks ago I probably wouldn’t even have thought about it, with the fact that I wasn’t involved.

“I’m just working on this season and I’ll see what happens in the summer. Staying would always be an option. I’ve enjoyed my time here. It needs to fit all parties and we’ll see where it takes us.”

McKay isn’t an obvious fit for the 3-5-2 formation Town used after Grayson’s arrival. And he isn’t an out-and-out number 10 but has taken on that role to good effect.

The Scot said: “It’s a great bunch of boys, a great squad and I feel like – and I said this a while ago – I can add something different to what is already in the team. I’m enjoying my football and showing a lot of confidence.

“At half-time on Saturday (at Doncaster) I was told to get at them a bit more – that’s kind of what I did.

“I came to Fleetwood to play games. With a change of manager and different opinions, he obviously saw a different way of playing when he came in.

“It’s been all about working hard and showing what I can do in training and the reserve matches I played in. Then, when I got my chance, it was down to me to take it.

“For me, it’s just about playing as much as I can and helping the team out.

“We’ve underachieved this year and I think all the boys want to go out strong and show what a good team we are.”
