Alexander’s consistent message

Fleetwood Town need to find consistency in terms of both results and performances, says boss Graham Alexander.

Town have been hit and miss this campaign, a torrid away run of seven back-to-back defeats keeping them outside the top six.

No sooner had Alexander’s men ended that sorry record than they suffered a setback at home – a 1-0 defeat to Walsall on Saturday, the first at Highbury in 17 league fixtures.

Alexander’s men currently lie four points outside the play-off places but the manager knows that margin could have been much tighter.

“We’re tenth and we’re four points off the play-offs,” said Town boss.

“That could have been one point. It could have been much closer. But we simply didn’t live up to the standard we have set ourselves.”

Alexander knows his players will need no reminding about what went wrong against the Saddlers as they prepare for a tough trip to second-placed Swindon Town on Saturday.

The Robins are one of League One’s in-form sides, and Alexander made it clear Town’s management team wouldn’t be hammering home and messages or losing faith.

“It’s not a case that they won’t be allowed to forget it (last weekend’s defeat),” said Alexander. “It stays with you, a defeat and a poor performance.

“But we’re not going to beat these lads over the head and say everything is rubbish and terrible.

“We know we’ve got a good bunch of lads, who work hard during the week, and who are honest and have good qualities.

“Sometimes you don’t perform and it’s up to us to ask the right questions and find out why.”

Alexander has hinted at changes this weekend, with Antoni Sarcevic among the substitutes pressing for promotion from the bench.

Whoever the boss selects, the task is the same. He said: “We need to get to a point where we have that consistency, a real consistent mentality to get results.”=
