Fleetwood rugby's touch of class
Fleetwood Rugby Club welcomed nearly 100 local schoolgirls to an inaugural touch rugby competition at Melbourne Avenue.
The Blackpool Wyre & Fylde Schools Sports Partnership brought together five local schools, with teams from Cardinal Allen Catholic High School, South Shore Academy, Saint Bede’s Catholic High School, St Mary’s Catholic Academy and Millfield Science and Performing Arts College entering under-13 and under-15 teams.
The highest finishing Wyre and Fylde team in the U13 competition had the added incentive of going on to represent those boroughs at the Lancashire School Games.
Cardinal Allen were the successful school and will compete at Blackpool Sports Centre onJuly 4.
The morning session concentrated on training and preparation, with matches in the afternoon.
Lee Cadwallader of Wyre & Fylde Schools Sports Partnership said the day was a resounding success.
He said: “We’ve enjoyed an absolutely fantastic day. Over 90 girls all learned the ethos behind the game regarding etiquette, such as respecting the referee, teamwork and working together.
“This all came together in the tournament and it was a really good community feel to the day.
“This is the first year we’ve done a touch rugby tournament for girls and I’m sure it will only go from strength to strength.
“Fleetwood are a brilliant and accommodating club. They have great facilities and it’s somewhere we’ll continue to utilise.”
Laura McNeill plays for Fleetwood Under-15s and represented Cardinal Allen in the event.
Laura said: “We all had a really great day. It gave people an opportunity to experience what we do at training each week and hopefully it will help grow our squad.
“Everyone enjoyed the day and I’m sure a few more girls will now join us at training.”
Girls from reception to year 11 are welcome to join training at the club and further information is available from coach Kerry Corkhill on 07738 393731.
