The black Audi A4 drove onto the tram tracks and smashed into a pillar supporting overhead electrical cables.

Airbags deployed in the car which was seriously damaged in the crash.

Police and ambulance crews attended the scene. The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving.

Crews from Bispham Fire Station and Fleetwood Fire Station also attended along with engineers from Blackpool Transport.

Wayne Allcock, watch manager at Bispham Fire Station said: "When we arrived the police had already made arrests.

"The car was on the tram lines and from the scene it was clear it had been travelling at some speed.

"We waiting for Blackpool Transport to confirm the electricity had been isolated before making the vehicle safe so it could be recovered by Lancashire Police."

One eyewitness told The Gazette: "It looked like the car had lost a third of its original size.

"I passed at around 1,30am and there were two fire engines, two ambulances and around six police cars.

"It looked a real mess."

Lancashire Road Police tweeted tram services would not be operating beyond the accident scene over the weekend.

Blackpool Transport have now said services are running but a speed restriction is in place at the scene of the accident.
