The driver of a white tipper truck was caught on camera dumping rubbish down the middle of Chadfield Road in Blackpool at around 11.30am yesterday.

Michelle Bracegirdle, 44, who lives on neighbouring Lilac Avenue and witnessed the carnage, said: “It’s disgusting and a health hazard. The lorry came to the corner of our street and stopped for about 45 seconds while they lifted up the back end, and then they just sped around the corner with all the rubbish falling off behind them.

“I have lived here for years and I’ve never seen anything like this.”

The lorry, which was recorded on CCTV, left a trail of waste approximately 75m long down the middle of the road.

A ceramic bath and toilet, a wheely bin, a mattress and several children’s ride-on car toys were among the piles of unwanted scrap that left some residents unable to move their cars from outside their homes.

Mum-of-two Michelle said: “It’s dangerous. Cars come down Lilac Avenue and they can’t see around the corner - it’s an accident waiting to happen.

“It’s a disgrace. This is a very quiet street normally and you don’t usually see this sort of thing around here. In the middle of the day as well - it’s just shocking.”

Chadfield Road resident Seaton Smith, 64, also witnessed the white van driving past his window.

He said: “I heard a loud bang so I went to the window and the next thing I know the van just dumped everything in the street and sped off. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Next-door neighbour Paul Riches, 48, agreed, saying: “I just don’t understand what would cause the driver to do something like that.

“I’ve heard of fly-tipping before, but nothing like this, on a residential street in the middle of the day. It has to be one for the record books.”

The mountain of rubbish was cleared by Blackpool Council at around 2pm, two-and-a-half hours after it was dumped.

Coun Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “It’s absolutely despicable that not only have our officers had to spend two hours clearing up this mess, but it could have been very dangerous for residents and pedestrians walking by. We are in the middle of the school summer holidays and there could have been any number of children nearby. There is simply no excuse for it.

“This is just unacceptable that our staff are having to waste time clearing up this rubbish when they should be out litter picking after a very busy few days in the resort. Our staff work incredibly hard to keep Blackpool looking as tidy as possible but incidents like this just make it so much more difficult.

“We attended within an hour with two cage vehicles to clear the road, and we will be doing everything we can to catch the culprits and bring them to justice – we will not hesitate to prosecute.

“Investigations are now underway from the limited evidence available.

Residents are reminded that with any contractors they employ to clear waste, the responsibility remains theirs unless they are given a duty of care notice from their contractors.
