He’s usually used to wowing crowds at his magic shows by making things disappear.
But now illusionist Richard De Vere says he is “devastated” at having to cancel his Blackpool Pleasure Beach show for the remainder of the summer after breaking his foot – and has been left wishing his crutches could disappear instead.
Mr De Vere sustained the injury after hitting a pothole while out riding his bicycle close to his home in Thornton on Wednesday evening.
It means his Beyond Belief show has had to be cancelled for the rest of its 2013 run in October.
He said: “There’s absolutely nothing I can do.
“I can’t carry on with the show in a wheelchair and I can put any pressure on my foot, so I’m absolutely devastated.
“I’d like to thank everybody who has supported me over the past 21 years, the decision wasn’t taken lightly but I had no option.”
He added: “Unfortunately, I can’t make the crutches disappear.”
Mr De Vere’s show normally runs on Monday and Tuesday evenings throughout the summer season at the Pleasure Beach’s Horseshoe Bar.
He is now recovering at home and hopes to get back to performing as soon as possible.
But he admits that he won’t be fully back on his feet until the 2013 summer season is over.
He said: “I’ve never missed shows before and I’m just in shock.
“I was on my bike, I hit a pothole and tried to save myself by jumping off the bike, but I smashed my foot into the kerb.
“I’ve got a good team around me so I’m going to get better as soon as possible, but by the time I’m in any fit state the season will be over sadly.”
