The contract to operate the service ended on Friday.

The future of the service is in doubt after Lancashire County Council made the decision not to continue funding the route.

Wyre Council chiefs are desperate to keep the historic link alive but are hoping County Hall might reverse its decision.

And now a deal has been struck to continue the service until after County Council elections take place next month.

A spokesman said: “The decision was made to defer the decision and negotiate to continue to provide the service in the short term.

“Wyre Marine Services have been approached and have agreed to continue to run the ferry service initially for a period of two months extendable month by month thereafter in order that the service can continue to operate until a final decision is reached.”
