YOUNG people involved in the latest Prince’s Trust scheme in Fleetwood have spoken glowingly about their experiences.

A dozen members of a Prince’s Trust crew – called Team 25 – spent 12 weeks on the scheme.

The Trust runs a range of training programmes and provides mentoring support for people aged 16 to 25, many of who are not currently in work or training but have plenty of potential.

It culminated in a presentation night at Fleetwood Town FC’s hospitality suite, where the young people each gave a presentation on their experiences.

Back in October they faced awful weather conditions as they transformed the People’s Park on the town’s West View estate.

After hours of weeding, digging and painting during the two-week project, comedian and entertainer Syd Little officially cut the ribbon to mark the completion of the facelift.

Their 12-week course also featured a residential at the Humphrey Head outdoor centre in Grange Over Sands, which included abseiling, canoeing and general team building. Next came work placement with employers in Fleetwood and other areas in Wyre.

One of the young people involved, Michael Webster, 22, of Thornton, said: “It has made a me a lot more confident. I was able to get up in front of a crowded room and give a talk. I would never have been able to do that before. The work experience with the fire service was also awesome.”

And Daniel Green, 18, of Fleetwood, said: “The residency at Humphrey Head was the best bit, but I also enjoyed working as a team. I just wish it had lasted all year!”

Another part of the scheme involved arranged Christmas parties at Larkholme Community and Welbeck House sheltered housing project. This was part of the team challenge event and saw the young people plan the parties around the needs of the older folk. Members of Larkholme Community Centre said a special thank-you to Team 25. Paul Clarke, a former Fleetwood policeman, is team leader of the town’s Prince’s Trust project, along with PCSO Linda Stackhouse, project support worker.

Linda said: “It has been a great success. Now the next session is due to start in January and we can be contacted on either 07796 147383 or 07900 268707.”
