The plea comes ahead of restrictions being lifted next week as part of the Government's roadmap out of lockdown, to allow six people, or two households, to meet outdoors.

But leaders in both Wyre and Fylde have urged visitors who live out of the area not to flock to the coast before April 12, as children break up from school for Easter half term.

Leaders of Fylde and Wyre Councils, Coun Karen Buckley and Coun David Henderson respectively, said although they looked forward to welcoming visitors back, now was "not the time to let our guard down."

The leaders said: “We cannot wait to welcome visitors back to our boroughs and businesses are busy making preparations for when they can safely reopen as part of stage two of the national roadmap, which is no earlier than April 12.

"We understand that people are very much looking forward to rediscovering the Fylde and Wyre and we have really missed our visitors, but at this crucial stage in the plan now is not the time to return just yet.

"All the latest data is pointing towards much brighter days ahead and every single person has a vital role to play in ensuring the roadmap can roll out as planned.

"Now is not the time to let our guard down and we must all keep going in order to return to normality as soon as possible."
