Derek Scrivener, 92, of Beach Road, was commanding officer of Fleetwood Sea Cadets for 28 years years, becoming an inspiration to thousands of young people who went on to learn new skills and discipline.

The British Citizen Award scheme (BCA) serves to recognise individuals who have displayed exceptional endeavour to their local community and who have worked tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on society.

During the 1960s, Fleetwood Sea Cadets band became one of the best in the nation, winning a string of national competitions, and some of its members later went on to form Fleetwood Old Boys Band, a bugle-led band still going strong today and a mainstay of key events such as Fleetwood Carnival and the town's Remembrance Day parade.

Paul Reynolds, a former member of Fleetwood Sea Cadet himself, was among a group in the town who nominated Derek for the ward.

Paul, now of Seniors Drive, Cleveleys, said: "I am delighted to be able to confirm a long overdue recognition of Mr Scrivener’s lifetime dedication to the youth and community of the town.

"His British Citizen Award medal is fully deserved.

"He was an inspiration to literally thousands of boys and girls who joined Fleetwood Sea Cadets.

"He was the ‘Mr Motivator’ of his time.

"He served as an officer and Commanding Officer of the unit for over 40 years.

"He had already served his country in the Royal Navy.

"When he retired from Fleetwood Sea Cadets, he carried on with his service to the community with Rossall School Cadet Force, the Royal

Naval Association and other community organisations.

"He was ‘instrumental’ in the formation of the Fleetwood Old Boys Band."

The medal will be presented to Derek at a ceremony in Fleetwood at a later date.
