A pedestrian spotted the girl outside Ightenhill Primary School in Alder Street after she had made her way out of the Munchkins Club at Ightenhill Nursery School in Lionel Street.

The member of the public ushered the girl into the primary school where a member of staff contacted the nursery club. The incident happened on Thursday morning at the private club which shares the premises of Ightenhill Nursery.

A spokesman for Munchkins Club said: “We would like to express our sincere apologies to the family regarding the incident.

“We would like to reassure all parents and carers of children at Munchkins Club that this matter has been taken very seriously and all the necessary action has been taken to ensure that this will never happen again.

“The safety of the children in our care is our paramount concern.”

The spokesman added that in the 24 hours since the incident, practical changes have been made to doors and gates giving access to Munchkins Club, including fitting additional locks and changing procedures to ensure that at least one door is locked at all times.
