New £12k set of swings due to arrive at park

The funds for the amenities were made available after the Friends of the Memorial Park raised £6,000 and Fleetwood Town Council match-funded it.

Now Wyre Council, which owns the park, will install the swings in June and an official launch event will then be held.

There will be four swings –three flat bed swings and one specially adapted one for disabled children.

Ella Fletcher, a member of the Friends group, said: “I’m delighted the swings are finally coming.

“We can’t wait for them to come, we have been fund-raising for this for a long time.

“Even though the memorial Park has been revamped by the council, the one thing it is missing is a set of traditional swings.

“Now we can put that right.”

The swings will be sited in the middle of the park’s play area.

Fleetwood Town Council made the funds available after the Friends approached the authority.

Coun Terry Rogers, chairman of the Town Council, said the council considered the wings to be a sound community scheme which would benefit youngsters from across the town.

Fleetwood’s Memorial Park has been extensively revamped and improved thanks to a £2.4m restoration grant but the one thing missing has been a traditional set of swings.

The park, which last year won its first ever Green Flag award in recognition of quality maintenance and facilities, has not had any flat-seat swings for older children since the previous decrepit set had to be removed for safety reasons two years ago.

The £2.4m improvement project at the park includes restoration of the war memorial, entrances, pond, pathways and pavilion and a greater range of sports and play facilities.

The Friends raises funds for amenities in the park also grows flowers for the park.
