Customers of the company’s Anchorsholme West store have been using a service route onto Fleetwood Road temporarily to relieve congestion while work is undertaken on the sea defences and in Anchorsholme Park.

Several residents had submitted objections to the scheme being made permanent, claiming it created a traffic hazard. But Blackpool Council’s planning committee was told the access had been in use for two years without there being any accidents.

Coun Jim Elmes said: “Cars exiting from the car park will be slower moving than cars coming from the traffic lights, so the danger will actually be lessened.”

A report to the committee added the application “is considered to be a significant improvement in the flow of traffic out of the application site, taking some of the pressure off the junction of Anchorsholme Lane West and Fleetwood Road.”

Councillors voted in favour of the scheme going ahead.
