Job fears raised over closure of Manx ward

FLEETWOOD Hospital’s Manx ward is to close permanently, it has been announced.

The Trust which runs the hospital has tried to calm fears that up to 20 care worker jobs may be lost.

The ward, which provided inpatient care for older Fylde coast adults with mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, temporarily closed six weeks ago.

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust says alternative means of caring for the patients has meant the ward was becoming less full.

A Trust spokesperson said: “We are looking to avoid redundancies where possible and find suitable employment across the Trust.”

But one worker, who did not wish to be named, said: “I’m worried about the situation; Fleetwood is a small community hospital and lots of the staff work in the Fleetwood area. Now, those over 65 with mental health problems are being admitted to Lytham Hospital.”

Lee Morgan, secretary for Unison’s branch in Lancashire Care, said: “I am hopeful people there will be re-deployed. We are in talks to avoid redundancies and redeployment is the best option. Lancashire Care are doing their best to avoid job losses.”
