Birthday parties should always have a cake and Penny Farm's 15th was no exception.

But this one was made out of oats, bran and carrots and the guests who gobbled it down were the ponies at the rescue and rehabilitation centre near Blackpool.

“We placed it on the floor and the ponies just stuck their noses in it,” said Zoe Clifford at the World Horse Welfare centre off Preston New Road. “They absolutely loved it and wolfed it down.”

Scores of people turned out for the birthday party to mark 15 years at Penny Farm. Organisers estimate they raised well over £1,000 at the event.

The day had all the usual things that good birthday parties have - live music, donkey rides and face painting. It also had pony demonstrations together with games and competitions.

“It was a fabulous turnout and we want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who came to support it,” added Zoe.

In its 15 years, Penny Farm has rescued more than 700 horses from a life of neglect, and rehabilitated and rehomed them.

It currently has 82 residents stabled there.
