Poulton care home ordered to improve by the Care Quality Commission

Primrose Bank Care Home, in Breck Road, Poulton, requires improvement, the health regulator Care Quality Commission (CQC) said after a recent inspection.

It comes after a similar rating was given last year.

The CQC’s report, published earlier this week, said one regulation breach was found because “medicines were not always managed safely”.

Ratings were given in five key areas – ‘good’ for effectiveness, levels of caring, and responsiveness, and ‘requires improvement’ for safety and leadership – with an overall rating of ‘requires improvement’ also given.

People could not always have their prescribed medicine because there was no stock available,” the report said. “The registered manager explained this was due to issues with either dispensing or [the] collection of prescriptions by the pharmacy and action had been taken to obtain the medicines.

“At the time of the inspection, this had not been successful...”

The report added: "Prior to the inspection concluding the registered manager wrote to us. They explained they had taken immediate action to address the concerns we had found."

In response to the report, Primrose Bank Care Home released the following statement : "At Primrose Bank the safety of our residents is paramount. As mentioned in the report, since the first day of the inspection, the team at Primrose Bank had already begun to make the improvements needed raised by the CQC, which are now complete. We will continue to work closely with and review the external services, such as local GP Practices and Boots Chemist to improve the timely supply of medication into the home and review. We do feel however that the report does not accurately reflect the amount of improvements that have made in the past 12 months at the home. We would argue that the report is unfairly weighted and that it does not reflect some of the fantastic work our team of dedicated care and support staff do, which has been recognised by other agencies and organisations besides the CQC. We look forward to welcoming back the CQC as soon as possible, so that we can demonstrate the safe methods of working at the home in regards to medication and improve the overall rating"
