Health bosses say their unique style of caring for patients is proving so popular on the Fylde coast they are in talks over extending their stay at Rossall Hospital.

Spiral Health Care has been short-listed for three national awards for its work at Bispham Hospital and is currently replicating it success in Fleetwood.

Managing director Tracey Bush said initiatives including Spiral’s one-page profiles, which it uses to help staff get to know patients better, are key to the company’s success.

She said: “There’s nothing confidential on the profiles but they just give a little bit more information. The staff all do one as well.

“It’s about treating the patient as a person and not just for their condition – I think it does make a difference.

“People might have family members abroad and it might be really important to talk to them so we have got WiFi at Rossall so people can talk to relatives on Skype. It helps with recovery rates and getting people back to health.”

Spiral, which has been running Bispham Hospital since April 2012, took over at Rossall Hospital on December 1.

The facility had been closed since August after rehabilitation services were centralised to Clifton Hospital, in St Annes, despite residents’ protests.

Spiral was commissioned by Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group to operate 20 beds at Rossall over the winter months as part of a temporary plan to increase bed capacity.

But now the company has confirmed it is in talks over extending its stay.

A spokesman said: “Discussions are now underway about the future plans for Rossall but Spiral Health cannot comment on them at present and will continue to provide an excellent service for community members.”
