A Fleetwood couple well known for their folk music endeavours will be celebrating their golden wedding anniversary with an informal evening of live music

Alan and Christine Bell, of The Strand, Fleetwood, were involved with the Fylde Folk Festival for over 40 years before closing the event when Alan retired as festival director in 2014.

They will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Friday January 15 and Alan, a well known musician and songwriter in his own right, will be involved in a concert on Saturday January 16.

The event takes place at the North Euston Hotel from 8pm onwards and will include performances by Fleetwood folk acts Thistle, Scolds Bridle and Ian Gartside.

While Alan’s role as director of the Fylde Folk Festival was well known, Christine played a key administrative role and still shares Alan’s passion for folk music and songs.

Alan, 81, and Christine, 71, are still involved in music through the folk arts network Folkus, which stages music workshops across the North West on a regular basis.

Alan said: “We were married at St Paul’s Church, Marton, on January 15 1966. Christine was a South Shore girl and she lived just across the road from the church.

“We honeymooned in the Swiss Alps and we hope to reprise that holiday this year, although I’m recovering from recent knee surgery so we might delay that until later!”

The couple have two sons, Alistair, who lives in Vancouver, Canada, and Jamie, who is based in Sheffield.
