Youngsters in Fleetwood will be entitled to free swimming sessions at the town’s leisure centre throughout the summer holidays.
The scheme at YMCA Fleetwood Health and Fitness Centre on The Esplanade has been made possible thanks to a £1,000 grant from Fleetwood’s two County Council members.
Coun Lorraine Beavers and Councillor Ron Shewan are entitled to allocate funds via the County Councillors’ Local Member Grant Scheme, and decided to donate £500 each to provide the free swimming.
The scheme enables councillors to support local voluntary and community sector groups in providing a variety of community activities within their electoral divisions.
Coun Beavers, the Labour representative for Fleetwood West, said: “I am the Health and Wellbeing leader at County Hall and it is so important that the children in our town get enough exercise.
“We thought this would be a really good way to allocate our funds.”
The free sessions are only available at the baths and not at the town’s splash pad.
Steve Mullins, YMCA Fleetwood General Manager, said, “YMCA Fleetwood are delighted to receive this grant and thank Councillor Beavers and Shewan for supporting the project.
“Our aim is to encourage more children in Fleetwood to participate and get active through swimming.”
The free swimming is available during public swimming sessions for children aged 16 and under until September 4.
Proof of residency at an FY7 postcode, such as utility bills, is required.
Any children under the age of eight must be accompanied by a paying parent or guardian aged 18 or over.
