A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "Appliances from Blackpool and Bispham attended a fire in a three storey property on Derby Road, Blackpool.

"On arrival the residents indicated that there was a fire in an unoccupied flat on the top floor.

"Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose-reel to quickly extinguish the fire and then a ventilation unit to clear smoke from the property. Due to the quick actions of the crew no further flats were damaged by fire.

"The origin of the fire was found to be a sofa in the living room area of the flat. The sofa was destroyed and the remainder of the flat suffered serious smoke damage."

The fire is being treated as suspicious and a joint investigation is being carried out by the Police and Fire Service.

Nobody was injured in the fire.
