An investigation has been launched by police after eight children’s graves were damaged in Fleetwood cemetery.

Thieves stole a lantern from a six-and-a-half-week-old baby boy’s grave and ripped up flowers from a plant pot.

They have also removed small ornaments from the graves in the surrounding area before vandalising a further seven graves in the Beach Road cemetery where the flowers and ornaments were damaged.

The lantern was taken overnight on Thursday, November 14 and the family believing it had been mislaid replaced it.

But the next night the thieves returned and stole the replacement lantern.

PC Victoria Merrill, of Fleetwood Police, said: “Obviously this damage has quite rightly caused a lot of upset throughout the town and I would reassure people that the damage is being actively investigated.

“The families affected are as you would expect outraged and sickened so I would urge anybody that has any information that could assist with our investigation to contact Fleetwood police on 101.”
