A desperate dad whose benefits had been cut stole nappies from a shop for his two-year-old child.

Jason Sparks, 40, of Calder Avenue, Fleetwood, pleaded guilty to theft.

He was given a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £4.99 compensation with £30 costs plus £15 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said Sparks walked into Super News and Booze, Fleetwood, went straight to where the nappies were and left without paying for the one packet he took on March 18 at 11am.

Sparks had previously had a lengthy criminal record but had not been in trouble for four years.

Martin Hillson, defending, said Sparks benefits had been sanctioned.

He had been left with just £50 a fortnight to live on and was appealing to the benefits agency about it.

His young daughter was ill and he did not have enough money to buy nappies for her so he took one packet and told police he would pay when he got his benefits money in a few days.
