Over the Easter weekend, the county’s police force was contacted by several people using Santander cash machines – mainly in the east of the county, but a report was also made about the machine in Clifton Street, Lytham.

Police were seen at the cash machine on Saturday evening.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said around a dozen reports have been lodged, and relate to cash machines at various Santander branches.

An earlier warning covered the east of the county, but police later urged all residents to report anything suspicious.

“We’ve had about a dozen reports of suspicious activity at Santander ATMs in the last two days,” the force tweeted.

“Please report anything suspicious on 101.”

An earlier message read: “Please be extra vigilant when using Santander ATMs in the east of the county. Reports are coming in of them being tampered with.”

Santander yesterday advised customers: “Don’t use a cash machine if it looks like it has been modified or tampered with.

“Never let anybody see your PIN and shield the keypad when entering the number.”
