Despite the unsuccessful campaign bid organiser Jon Amor, who coaches at both clubs, is positive about the overall exercise.

He says the two sporting outfits, which are close neighbours in the town’s Broadwater area, are now working together even more closely.

He said: “There’s always a small chance of success when competing against larger organisations and clubs. That doesn’t take away from the overall effort from local people who joined our campaign and voted.

“The process has been a success in many other ways. It has brought both clubs even closer together and laid down a firm avenue for future co-operation.

“Away travel means recruiting willing parents to fill cars and this raises issues apart from costs and the environmental impact. Travelling together as a team helps the players bond and reduces other issues such as health and safety and safe-guarding assessments.

“We will be calling on local business support consider backing our efforts. Instead of looking for a lump sum we may now look to cover a monthly lease payment which makes a sponsorship opportunity much more attractive.” PhoneJon on 07525 104 352
