He’s cheeky, friendly, will be a huge help around the house – but he is also a TV star.
Meet Charlie, the 14-week old golden labrador puppy, who will become a big part of Carol Willacy’s life.
He is already making good friends with Carol’s current assistance dog, Billy, the Jack Russell.
And readers may recognise him – he is the star of an Andrex TV advert, being shown currently.
Eve told Carol’s story in May. The 45-year-old, from Fleetwood, has severe osteoarthritis, which seriously affects her mobility.
She has other mobility problems, after a horse-riding accident left her with spinal damage. She has to use a wheelchair, as she can only walk a few steps.
But her guardian angel Billy, who was trained up as an assistance dog by charity Support Dogs, is always there to help.
He helps around the house by getting washing out of the machine, opens and closes doors and turns lights on and off, he picks up items, like the phone, if she accidentally drops them, he finds items such as keys and helps her with tasks like taking her coat off when she comes into the house.
Billy has also helped Carol get urgent help when she needed it – twice – after collapsing.
Charlie is now being trained up with Support Dogs, so he will be ready to help Carol, when Billy retires.
She said: “Charlie is gorgeous. He really is a true Andrex puppy, as he was filmed for the latest Andrex puppy advert in May.
“Charlie is incredibly mischievous at the moment and keeps running off with my toilet rolls!
“A local company, EverLawn, based in Poulton, have kindly helped by providing me with an artificial lawn – which is a perfect place for puppy training.
“As soon as they brought the sample to show me, he climbed on to it and fell asleep.
Thanks to EverLawn, Charlie will have the best start to life as an assistance dog.
“They are also involved in sponsoring Charlie. I’m very grateful to them, as I think it’s great when local companies get behind a life-changing cause, such as training assistance dogs.
“As it takes around £40,000 for each assistance dog, all raised from the kindness of people. I’m so grateful for the help of generous people like those at EverLawn.”
Steve Morgan, managing director of EverLawn, which provides artificial grass across the whole of the UK, said the company had been happy to help.
“We came round to survey for Carol and when she told me about her dogs and how much they help, I felt I wanted to do something and realised the benefits she would have from having the EverLawn product.
“Our patented product doesn’t need watering or trimming, and it is pet-friendly – it was ideal for Carol and her needs.
“We do quite a lot for charity, we like to when we can, especially for local charities or to help local people.
“It meant a day-and-a-half work for us, and we are so pleased Carol and her wonderful dogs will be able to reap the rewards.
“The dogs are fantastic and I couldn’t believe what a difference they make to Carol’s life.
“We’re glad this will make a difference for them all.”
