Fleetwood man Shaun Mecklenburgh ended up having a slightly merrier Christmas than expected –thanks to kind-hearted colleagues.

Shaun, a radiology porter at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, cycles to the hospital every day from his Fleetwood home.

But just before Christmas he was shocked to find that his bike had been stolen from outside the hospital.

It was a bitter blow for the porter, who had saved up his hard-earned cash to buy the machine and relied on it to get him to work.

But his generous radiology co-workers at the hospital came to the rescue after hearing all about the sickening theft.

And Shaun was astounded when, less than 24 hours later, colleagues had chipped in to get him a new bike.

Shaun said: “I was amazed. It was such a shock to get that new bike so quickly that I must admit I had a bit of a tear in my eye.

“It was a fantastic gesture and I can’t thank everyone enough for what they have done.

“I need the bike to get me to and from work and I didn’t really know what to do so when I was given a new one the next day it was brilliant.”

The collection was led by Shaun’s colleague Mark Neath.

Mark said: “We all know how he relied on that bike and we would never see a mate stuck.

“I started a collection and within a few hours I had enough to get a new one which was advertised on the Trust’s intranet.

“People were even offering me money long after I had enough to buy it and it was great to see so many people being so supportive for Shaun.

“I know he was really grateful and I am so glad that we have helped.”

There could have been a cloud over Christmas, but Shaun’s colleagues ensured it was a wheely good one
