The Fast and the Furious to Fury Road, are these the best driving films ever?

With motorists around the UK stuck indoors, it’s inevitable that many car fans have turned to the screen for their fix of car-related fun.

We’ve all got our favourites, whether it’s because of a particular car or an especially thrilling chase, but now a new survey claims to have come up with a list of the best driving films ever.

Dash cam maker Nextbase polled the great British public to find their favourite car movies, revealing that most put The Fast and the Furious at the top of their list.

The first in the increasingly ludicrous franchise beat the even more over-the-top Mad Max: Fury Road into second place. Compared with the complete madness of that post-apocalyptic stunt-fest, the talking vehicles of Pixar’s Cars, which came third, seem almost believable.

The list showed an interesting mix of favourites with Asif Kapadia’s excellent Senna documentary also featuring along with the recent road trip-based Green Book.

Bryn Brooker, head of marketing at Nextbase told Motoring Research: “In my humble opinion, it was a surprise to see The Fast and The Furious top this list. But, the people have spoken and there is no denying that the film offers some very entertaining driving sequences!

“That said, there are some truly excellent entries on both of these lists and we absolutely encourage everyone to give these a watch during this time. The variety here will help to keep people’s interest and, with many of our vehicles sat outside being given very little use during this time, it may be the closest we can get to a long, leisurely drive for a while – not that any of us drive like Vin Diesel on a daily basis, obviously!”

The survey also asked for viewers’ favourite car scenes from the movies, putting right a couple of glaring omissions from the best movies list.

Top of the list was 1969’s Italian Job, although not for its spectacular chase through the streets and sewers of Turin but for Michael Caine’s famous line about those doors.

Astonishingly in second place, Rowan Atkinson’s clowning at the wheel of a Mini in Mr Bean’s Holiday proved popular, ahead of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’s iconic first flight.
