THE DOORS are ready to be opened at a Fleetwood adventure group after refurbishments were completed.
Wet and Wild Outdoor Adventure for All was awarded £50,000 after seeing off competition from Middleton Little Theatre, Manchester, during ITV’s Big Lottery People’s Millions in November 2010.
The public were asked to vote for their favourite project with the winner receiving the cash.
The work on their boating lake clubhouse and the modernising of the changing rooms and toilets has now been completed, while new kayaking and canoeing equipment has been purchased.
Anthony Alderson, fundraising coordinator for Outdoor Adventure Group, the charity in charge of Wet and Wild Outdoor Adventure for All, said: “It all started with an initial bid to the Big Lottery for funds and we’re delighted to record a win for Fleetwood after beating off such stiff competition.”
“This is again a fantastic opportunity to provide more for the community we live in.
“Our younger members are particularly important to us and we are now in a position to offer more to local youth groups which we are delighted by.
“We are now able to provide more activities and services for local people in the many years to come.”
The volunteer organisation provides opportunities for people of all ages from five to 70.
County Councillor Andrea Kay, chair of the Wyre Children’s Trust, added: “This is a wonderful example of local people working together to provide positive leisure time pursuits for youngsters. It’s an inspiring and well deserved project.”
Paul Collins, chairman of the Outdoor Adventure Group, added: “Getting these refurbished facilities in what is our 21st anniversary year is a fantastic birthday present.
“It will now enable us to provide canoeing and kayaking for all abilities.”
