Wyre residents invited to join doorstep vigil for Covid victims on first lockdown anniversary

A minute’s silence will be held across the UK at midday on Tuesday (March 23) to reflect on the lives lost to coronavirus and the grief endured by those left behind.

Residents have also been encouraged to light up their doorsteps at 8pm with phones, candles and torches.

Prominent buildings and landmarks will also be illuminated across the UK.

Councillor David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council, said: "I’d like to invite everyone to join us in lighting a candle to remember those we’ve lost and to use the opportunity to reflect on the last year.

"We are always stronger together and we will get through this."

Boris Johnson announced the first national stay-at-home order on March 23, 2020, days after warning many families would "lose loved ones before their time".

The total number of recorded deaths linked to coronavirus in the UK stood at 335 on that date. There have now been 143,259 deaths, according to the latest figures.

Councillor Henderson added: "This has been an incredibly difficult year and my thoughts are with everyone who has lost someone they love to this terrible virus.

"As we continue to fight through this pandemic, I want to thank all key workers, from NHS staff to refuse collectors, you have kept our country going whilst you yourselves have struggled and I cannot thank you enough.”
