Firefighters were called to a rubbish blaze in South Shore which it is believed was started deliberately and left two unoccupied houses smoke-logged.

An engine each from South Shore and Blackpool stations spent two hours on Saturday morning at the site of the blaze to the rear of Shaw Road.

Damage was caused to a telegraph pole, resulting in problems with telephone and broadband reception but there were no casualties.

South Shore crew manager Ian Turnbull said: “It was a fairly large blaze which we believe was started by person or persons unknown.

“We were there for a couple of hours ensuring it didn’t spread to the nearby homes.

“It left a couple of homes on Haig Road logged with smoke, but they were unoccupied.”
