Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said the case was suitable to be heard at a magistrates court.
Sturdy told magistrates the friend had made-up the assault accusation after Sturdy found out he had been having an affair with his wife for two years.
Sturdy said he then told the man’s wife about the affair.
He agreed his trial should take place at a magistrates court.
Sturdy was bailed for trial on May 16 and must not contact the complainant as a condition of his bail.
